Let’s take a step back in time by a couple years. It’s my sixth form prom night and I’m panicking because my hair just will not curl; and it’s not the first time. Having thick hair has it’s blessings, and also it’s curses. Sometimes, no matter what you do to it, it will disobey. Even before nights out now, I have to allow at least an hour and a half to sort out my hair into an acceptable style, which usually falls out anyway due to the weight of my brunette locks. However, I don’t give up!
I currently own 2 curling irons, one with two interchangeable barrels, which is about 10 years old now, and a Toni & Guy (which is the one that let me down before my prom!). I’ve also tried heated rollers, but nothing seems to quite do it for me. Maybe my hair is just as picky as it’s owner. After coming to the end of my tether with not being able to get the curls I’ve always wanted, I decided to invest in a new curling iron, preferably ones with ‘bumps’ as I call them. After a fair amount of googling, and a quick trip to Argos, I became the owner of the Babyliss Diamond Waves curling iron.
Okay so not only is this the best curling iron I’ve purchased (we’ll get onto that later) but it sparkles and has actual diamonds (not sure about this one) in it which apparently help spread the heat evenly across the curler (not sure about that one either) – overall, it’s glittery and it works well. But let’s get onto the serious part of the review.
So, it’s amazing. The barrel heats up to 210 degrees, which I didn’t think would be hot enough at first, however it proved me wrong! I used the heat setting 180 or so and it worked perfectly fine on my hair which is thick enough to provide warmth in the colder months. There are a few heat settings which are easy to select on the curler. I highly recommend you use the included heat-proof glove, as I ended up burning myself a few times. It also heated up incredibly fast, especially considering it had it’s first use there and then.
I don’t like to mess about too much when it comes to my hair, considering it takes long enough as it is, so I curled it all in one big section, instead of clipping bits up here and there. I also gave it a generous spritz of Treseme Heat Defence styling spray.
Using various sized strands of hair, I wrapped it around the curler, and let it do the rest of the work. After the first few, I was a bit unsure, but as I got into the groove of things, I was impressed. Finally, a curling iron that actually gives the perfect size curl and perfect amount of heat! The shape of the wand allows you to guide your hair around it, and really creates that perfect curl – the one I’ve been trying to achieve for many years! I’m not sure if it is anything to do with the ‘diamonds’, but my hair didn’t feel at all damaged, or dried out by the heat, it felt almost salon quality, nice and soft with a great style to it.
I’ll leave a before and after picture at the bottom so you can see the difference between the two. Overall it took me about 30-40 minutes to do my entire head of hair, which is an improvement from before! I’m not sure I’ll be curling my hair everyday from now on, but I’ll definitely feel more excited to do so! Babyliss, it’s a 10/10 from me – keep making sparkly products please.
